"No matter what you're learning about, the background you bring to the classroom affects the way you respond."

Zane Thayer '08 speaks on the value of diversity in the classroom

Zane Thayer

“However you define it, the value of diversity in the classroom and in the lab is that students bring different insights, experiences, and questions. That’s incredibly powerful for everyone involved. I’m a biological anthropologist, so a lot of my work focuses on the effects of stress on health. Having students from a range of backgrounds absolutely benefits our classroom discussions about stress. The types of stressors that you experience growing up are often very different depending on whether you come from a wealthy family or a poor family. My students learn from one another—and I learn from all of them.”
