Summary of Terms
The Philip J. Hanlon 1977 Fund for Undergraduate Research will support undergraduate research opportunities at Dartmouth and will be monitored by the Dean of the Faculty. The Gail Gentes 1977a Fund for Internships and Experiential Learning will support Dartmouth’s Center for Professional Development programs with a preference for the Student Experiential Learning Fund (SELF) Program and will be monitored by the Dean of the College. Dartmouth’s Office of Finance & Administration will oversee this fund in accordance with the endowment management, distribution, and utilization policies established by the Board of Trustees which govern the investment of endowment funds and the distribution and utilization of endowment earnings to defray the total costs of programs designated for support by donors. This includes direct costs, associated costs and infrastructure and renewal costs essential for programs to succeed.
When gifts to the Philip J. Hanlon 1977 Fund for Undergraduate Research reach the threshold required to establish a dedicated Center for Undergraduate Research, the center shall be named the Philip J. Hanlon 1977 Center for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creativity. Dartmouth reserves the right to revoke its obligations regarding a naming should any material adverse event create a situation in which the Board of Trustees determines the naming is detrimental to Dartmouth’s reputation. This determination will be guided by Dartmouth’s mission and core values. If gifts to the Gail Gentes 1977a Fund for Internships and Experiential Learning do not reach $100,000 (the current minimum required for a restricted endowment) by June 30, 2023, gifts may be expended for the purpose described above. If, at some time in the future, it is the opinion of the Trustees of Dartmouth College that all or part of the income from these Funds can no longer be usefully applied to the objectives as stated above, the Trustees may use the income for another purpose which, in its opinion, most nearly approximates the intended objectives.
